Committee of RCT Town Twinning Association

Committee of RCT Town Twinning Association

The Association is chaired by Mervyn R Pugh , who had been involved in twin town exchanges for over thirty years with all four of RCT’s twin towns. He is ably assisted by the Vice Chairman Andrew Chainey who is a local businessman, who has been involved in twinning links for several years.

Andrew Chainey is also the Treasurer and the Association’s webmaster. Andrew has had extensive experience in web design and has set up a company in Montelimar, through a contact made by the Association .

Other members include Russell Roberts a former Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taff Council, who has a lot of experience in town twinning and business. Town Councils are also represented on the Association.

At the first meeting of the new Twinning Association…

…it was agreed that the Association should undertake a limited amount of tasks initially i.e.

  • Facilitating links between schools, groups, individuals and businesses.
  • Giving help and assistance to groups involved in town twinning.
  • Offering advice on how twinning links can be formed and supported.
  • Help with identifying funding sources.

During 2015 the Association members hope to develop links with organisations to support the twin town links within Rhondda Cynon Taff and to raise the profile of town twinning.

Rhondda Cynon Taff

Rhondda Cynon Taff was formed on 1st April 1996 through the merger of  Rhondda B.C., Cynon Valley.B.C and Taff-Ely B.C. It is the second largest Unitary Authority in Wales with a population of over 225,000 inhabitants. In the early 1900’s there were over eighty coal mines operating in the valleys , most of them in the Rhondda Valley.

Today all of the deep mines are closed , the last one ,  Tower Colliery, was closed in 2008 after being operated by the miners themselves for twelve profitable years. Land near the former Colliery is now an Opencast Mine .
